Public Lecture by Professor Byoung-Hyoun Hwang Explores how “word of mouth” influences Investment Decisions and Markets

(只提供英文版本) [1 September 2025] – The Department of Economics and Finance (EAF) recently hosted a captivating public lecture, “How Conversations Move Markets: A Social View of Investing,” delivered by Professor Byoung-Hyoun Hwang. Professor Hwang is a leading finance expert from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a member of the EAF Academic Advisory Board (AAB). The lecture was a highlight of Professor Hwang’s four-day visit to the department.

The event drew a full house of more than 220 enthusiastic students and faculty members. It commenced with a warm welcoming remark by Professor Sam Park, Dean of the School of Business. Dean Park expressed his gratitude to Professor Hwang for his visit and outlined the School of Business’s AAB scheme, which invites world-class scholars to advise on academic development, promote research, and enrich the learning experience for both students and faculty.

In his illuminating talk, Professor Hwang discussed the profound impact of social interactions and “word of mouth” on investment behaviors and market outcomes. He presented compelling research showing that investors are significantly more likely to purchase stocks that are discussed within their social circles, particularly those perceived as exciting or glamorous. A key finding is that these socially-driven investment decisions often lead to poorer performance.

The lecture was attended by senior management from EAF and the School of Business, including Professor Roman MATOUSEK (Head of EAF), Professor Louis CHENG, Associate Dean (Research), School of Business, Dr S H Ho Professor of Banking and Finance, Dr Andrew WU, Associate Dean (Executive Education and Continuous Learning), School of Business, and Dr Kaz KWOK, Associate Head of EAF. Dr King King LI introduced the speaker to the audience.

Beyond the public lecture, Professor Hwang’s visit included productive meetings with Dean Park and other senior management. He also held individual one-to-one meetings with EAF faculty members for academic exchange, providing guidance on research projects and offering valuable insights.
