BBA‑Econ Talk: How to Become a Chief Economist?

Speaker: Thomas Shik, Former Chief Economist of Hang Seng Bank

The BBA Econ Programme recently organized an online talk on February 5, delivered by Mr. Thomas Shik, former Chief Economist of Hang Seng Bank. Mr. Shik joined the bank in 2007 and was promoted to Chief Economist and Head of Economic Research for Global Markets in 2017, a position he held until 2025.

In the talk, Mr. Shik shared valuable insider insights into the nature of a Chief Economist’s work, as well as how the role continues to add value in the era of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of lifelong learning, staying informed about current developments, maintaining a serious and professional attitude, and cultivating strong reasoning skills—qualities that are essential across many professions.

The event attracted not only students from HSUHK but also online participants of students and teachers from several secondary schools, including Diocesan Girls’ School, St. Paul’s College, and Victoria Shanghai Academy.

Serving as a supporting event for the BBA‑Econ Career Accelerator Program and the Future Economist Program, the talk provided BBA‑Econ students with a valuable opportunity to connect with and learn from a leading professional in the industry.
