Papermaking Through Time: The Legacy and Its Impact on Civilization

Dr Salina Lee from the Department of Management (MGT) received funding from the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme to host the Hong Kong Paper Art Workshop on 5 February 2026. The workshop explored paper’s rich history—from ancient papermaking techniques to its modern applications in design and sustainability.

Leading the session was Ms Because Yeung, founder of Somoodstudio and recipient of the “International Sustainable Design Awards 2025”. Ms Yeung guided students through hands-on techniques for creating coloured handmade paper, sharing insights into traditional processes, paper’s societal impact throughout history, and its contemporary value as a crafted, eco-friendly material.

Students actively engaged in practical demonstrations, learning sustainable design principles while experimenting with paper as both functional material and artistic medium. The workshop highlighted how time-honoured craftsmanship can intersect with modern innovation and business opportunities.

This event showcased the Department’s dedication to interdisciplinary experiences, connecting cultural heritage with management and creative industries. Participants departed with practical skills, unique handmade paper creations, and fresh perspectives on sustainable entrepreneurship.
