Programme Overview

The BBA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for success in today’s dynamic accounting profession. The programme offers academic flexibility and adaptability across diverse study modes, while integrating critical emerging fields into the curriculum.

Our comprehensive curriculum covers financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, law, financial management, ethics, contemporary computer technology, and accounting information systems. In addition, we offer a wide range of specialty electives in areas such as data analytics, ESG reporting, internal auditing, and corporate governance. Most of our faculty are qualified accountants with practical industry experience, and our graduates receive exemptions from various professional examinations.

Apart from academic study, students also benefit from mentorship, local and overseas internships, alumni networking, and coaching for professional competitions—building confidence and practical expertise. Our graduates are highly sought after by employers, securing roles in accounting firms, financial institutions, management trainee programmes, or pursuing further studies.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Programme, students should be able to:

  • address professional and personal challenges through the application of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary knowledge acquired;
  • possess effective communication ability in a business environment, work as team players to integrate effectively the skills and knowledge developed, and manage independent lifelong learning;
  • evaluate own contributions and responsibilities in becoming responsible employees, business leaders and business partners;
  • possess broad horizons and be inquisitive about various global issues and developments such as politics, cultures, social sciences and technologies;
  • have a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge in accountancy in the first two years of studies, on which to build further studies; and
  • acquire a broader knowledge relating to advanced concepts in accountancy in the final two years and apply such knowledge to practical situations.

Academic Structure

The BBA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy is a four-year programme comprising 41 modules. Each module carries 3 credits (except for three English modules, which carry 2 credits each). The curriculum consists of 16 Common Core Curriculum modules, 10 Business Education modules, and 12 modules within the Professional Accountancy specialty (9 major core modules and 3 specialty electives), along with 3 Free Elective modules.

Senior-year entrants will be granted a block credit transfer for their prior studies on an individual basis. The number of modules to be taken may vary.

Professional Recognition

The Department of Accountancy has established strong relations with local and international professional bodies.   Accreditation and exemption, subject to regular reaccreditation, have been obtained from the following professional bodies:

  • The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA)
  • The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
  • CPA Australia
  • The Taxation Institution of Hong Kong (TIHK)

The exemptions a graduate could gain from the professional examinations are dependent on the accredited courses taken in the programme.

Career Prospects

BBA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy nurtures students to become professional accountants.  Like the professionals in medicine or architecture, accountants must pass rigorous professional examinations, abide by ethical standards and gain enough practical experience to become qualified.  The profession has a clear career path with attractive prospect.
