“Students here are not just asking where to study—they are asking how to position themselves in the market.”
— Reflection shared during on-site engagement
That observation shaped our approach in Changsha.
On 19 May 2026 at Xiangtan University (湘潭大學), our participation in the education fair focused on more than programme promotion. Conversations revealed a cohort of students who were highly pragmatic—keen to understand how postgraduate study could translate into competitive career advantage.
Leading the delegation, Professor Victor Lau, Associate Dean (Taught Postgraduate Programmes) and Master of Business Administration (in Chinese) Programme Director, alongside Ms Fiona Fong, Postgraduate Programme Manager, engaged students in discussions that went beyond academic offerings. Many enquiries centred on career positioning, industry exposure, and return on investment, highlighting a clear shift towards outcome-driven decision-making.
What distinguished this engagement was not just what students asked—but how the interactions informed our approach to the regional market:
- Conversations revealed strong regional demand for practical, career-oriented postgraduate pathways in Central China
- There was noticeable interest in programmes delivered in Chinese, particularly MBA (in Chinese), reflecting local accessibility priorities
- Engagements provided on-the-ground insights into how messaging and positioning need to be adapted for this market
These insights reinforced the need not just to recruit, but to sharpen how we communicate value in this evolving market.
The momentum continued on 21 May, where the focus turned to strategic discussions with recruitment partners. Rather than outreach, the priority was alignment—exploring how to strengthen admissions pipelines, refine promotion strategies, and enhance conversion from enquiry to enrolment.
Together, these engagements underscored a key shift:
building impact is no longer just about presence at events, but about connecting student expectations, partner strategies, and programme positioning into a cohesive admissions approach.
