A research seminar titled “From Theory to Practice: How Social Media Affordances Enable Neurodivergent Employee Participation in Workplace Decision‑Making” was held on 15 April, featuring Dr Xi Wen (Carys) Chan, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources at Griffith Business School.

The seminar examined how social media affordances can support meaningful workplace inclusion for neurodivergent employees (NDEs). Dr Chan introduced a technology‑inclusion framework highlighting how features such as anonymity and association shape participation across different dimensions of work, particularly in decision‑making contexts.

Empirical insights were drawn from a 10‑day experience sampling study involving 185 neurodivergent employees. The findings showed that association affordances enhanced psychological empowerment and positive affect, while anonymity primarily influenced participation through affective pathways. These digital mechanisms were found to be especially valuable when traditional interpersonal support was limited, indicating a compensatory role of social media in inclusive work practices.

By combining theory with empirical evidence, the seminar moved beyond general accommodation discussions and identified specific, actionable mechanisms through which digital platforms can enable neurodivergent employees to participate more effectively in organisational decision‑making.
