A Big Sister tutors the first ECO1001 class of the year

On 12 October, the Department of Economics and Finance launched its 2026/27 Semester 1 tutoring series for Business Economics. The tutor is a senior student.

The first session met from 15:00 to 17:00 in classroom D714. Students set out laptops and tablets along the table and worked through ECO1001 Business Economics 1 with Wong Tsun Yan, Mika. Mika is this year’s EAF Big Sister, a senior student invited to guide juniors on the department’s undergraduate programmes.

The opening session, 12 October 2026, classroom D714.

The series is organised by the EAF Student Orientation and Personal Tutor Group. Five sessions are held on Mondays from mid-October to the end of November. There is no charge. Places are reserved for EAF students on the BBA (Hons) in Financial Analysis and FinTech (BBA-FAFT), the BBA (Hons) in Finance and Banking (BBA-FB), and the BBA (Hons) in Economics (BBA-ECON).

A Big Sister in this scheme offers care, guidance, and subject help to younger students on BBA-FAFT, BBA-FB, and BBA-ECON. The role asks her to be a mentor, a friend, and a role model, and to give extra teaching when a junior student runs into difficulty.

The same attention runs through the year. EAF students are paired with a personal tutor. Early in the semester, the Tutor–Tutee Gathering brings new students and their tutors together to talk about their studies, professional preparation, and where to find help. The tutoring classes carry that care into the module itself: a small group, a senior who has already studied the module, and time for the question that did not fit in the lecture.

At EAF, ECO1001 is a shared beginning. Students who will later specialise in financial analysis and financial technology, in banking, or in economics start with the same questions: how households and firms decide, how markets work, and how to reason with cost, price, and incentive.
