Department of Economics and Finance Held Annual Retreat

The Department of Economics and Finance (EAF) at the School of Business, HSUHK, held its annual departmental retreat on 27 August at The Mira Hong Kong. The retreat brought together academic and administrative staff to reflect on the Department’s progress over the past year and to discuss priorities for the year ahead.

The retreat opened with remarks from the Head of Department, Professor Roman Matousek, who thanked academic and administrative colleagues for their hard work and contribution over the past year. Building on the Department’s achievements, he outlined several ambitious but achievable priorities for the coming academic year, particularly in research, teaching and departmental service.

The programme covered the main areas of the Department’s activities. Dr Kaz Kwok, Associate Head of Department, presented the Department’s research plans for the coming academic year, including the research seminar series, the FinTech Symposium and other research activities.

Teaching and learning formed another important part of the discussion. Dr Jason Liao gave a presentation on the use of artificial intelligence in teaching, supported by practical examples of how AI can be incorporated into teaching and student learning. Dr Wing Siu focused on pedagogical issues, including the challenges of maintaining and enhancing teaching quality and effective interaction with students.

Twelve departmental teams also gave presentations on their work. Each team reflected on its achievements over the past year and presented its priorities and plans for the coming academic year, covering research, teaching, student development, Alumni society, programme developments and other departmental activities.

The retreat provided a useful opportunity for academic and administrative colleagues to exchange views, consider areas for further improvement, and agree on the Department’s priorities for the year ahead. The discussions also reflected the strong sense of collegiality and collaboration within EAF.
