Welcome Fest 2026: A successful welcome, and an open invitation

The Department of Economics and Finance held Welcome Fest 2026 successfully on 24 August. New students gathered at the Yuen Campus for the EAF New Student Gala, welcomed by Professor Roman Matousek, Head of Department, Dr Kaz Kwok, Associate Head, and the programme directors. The afternoon showed what studying at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong feels like: close teaching, a clear path into finance and economics, and a community that meets you before the first lecture.

The afternoon

From 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 1/F of the Lee Quo Wei Academic Building, teachers walked the new class through the years ahead. Dr Johnny Kwok introduced Finance and Banking. Dr Jason Liao introduced Financial Analysis and FinTech, together with a new minor in Artificial Intelligence offered with the Department of Computer Science. Dr Li King King introduced Economics. Dr Andrew Wu explained why employers look beyond grades. Dr Brian Tung showed how innovation and entrepreneurship belong in a finance and economics degree, and Mr William Fan explained that internship and mentorship now form part of the path to graduation. Dr YW Siu closed with the sectors in which recent graduates work.

Teachers then opened the events students can enter this year. Mr Jason Lin of St James’ Settlement spoke on the Personal Finance Ambassador Programme. Dr YW Siu outlined the HKSI Institute Case Competition, in which industry sponsors guide a FinTech project through to a final interview. Mr Bosco Yim presented the Hong Kong Undergraduate Financial Planners of the Year Award, where HSUHK teams have been Champion and Best Presenter, and the department investment competition on a platform that uses live market data. Dr Xinyu Liu introduced the CFA Institute Research Challenge, from an equity research report to a presentation before industry experts. Dr David Chui described the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition at HSBC headquarters, judged by senior executives. Dr Ancus Shum and Mr Ken Chan showed how the department supports that work, from the trading laboratory to exchange, internships, and study tours.

Three honours degrees

Finance and Banking prepares students for banking and financial management, with recognition from the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong, the CFA Institute, and, through a minor in Real Estate Finance and Investment, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Financial Analysis and FinTech combines investment analysis with artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data. The programme is in the CFA Institute University Recognition Program, covering at least 70 per cent of the CFA Candidate Body of Knowledge. HSUHK is a founding member of the Institute of Financial Technologists of Asia.

Economics prepares graduates for analysis, forecasting, and policy work in business and the public sector.

A new minor in Artificial Intelligence, offered with the Department of Computer Science, adds applied AI for business, accounting, marketing, management, and economics and finance.

A campus built for a finance career

Students put that learning into practice in the Financial Trading Laboratory, on Bloomberg terminals. The same coaching that produced a Champion and Best Presenter at the Financial Planners award sits behind the competitions introduced in the afternoon.

Around the degree, every student has a personal tutor for the study plan and, later, for internship and career planning. Peer tutors offer free support in core economics and finance modules. Competition teams receive faculty coaching and industry mentors. The career series brings in banking and finance practitioners and alumni, with workshops on resumes, interviews, and job search. Students can also take the Huizhou internship, study tours, semester exchange or a short summer or winter programme, backed by an EAF exchange scholarship, and an annual CFA preparatory course with alumni. Graduates move into banking, wealth management, funds, private equity, trading, risk, compliance, and policy roles.
