Jetsetter Scholar: How I travel the world with HSUHK Hong Kong’s International Student Exchange Programme
Dim sum, egg tarts, roast goose, char siu or hot pot? Hong Kong’s diverse foods come in any shape, size, flavour, or taste guarantee to make food lovers hearts beat faster. There is no doubt that Hong Kong’s food scene offers a culinary variety that has something in store for everyone. As a food lover myself, I am still eating my way through Hong Kong and am not even close to being done. But it is not just about the food that is attractive, unique and diverse – so are the people living, working, or even studying in Hong Kong.
For international students, Hong Kong is incredibly exciting!
Although the delicious food is a highlight for me itself, there is so much more, and it is difficult to put into words how exciting my time as an international exchange student from Switzerland at the Hang Seng University in Hong Kong has been so far. And no – I am not getting paid to write this (unfortunately haha), I really mean it. Hong Kong has taken my heart by a storm. This city is full of life, energy, and opportunity. There is so much to see, do, eat (food coma guaranteed) and experience that you never have the chance to get bored here. The combination of Western and Chinese culture, the breath-taking skyline, the exciting nightlife, and the incredible diversity of people make Hong Kong a place like no other. But that’s not all.
It’s an opportunity to study and explore not just Hong Kong but neighbouring countries too
Hong Kong is also the perfect gateway to explore Asia! I travelled by ferry to Macao to discover the dazzling lights of the “Las Vegas of Asia” and experience the unique mix of Chinese and Portuguese culture. Another weekend trip took me to Seoul, where I was able to immerse myself in the world of K-pop, K-drama, and Korean skincare. And just recently, I spent almost a week in Manila, the Philippines, to spend time with my family, singing karaoke and enjoying Filipino dishes like chicken adobo and sinigang.
Next on my list: Taiwan, for which I am currently finding suitable dates in between mid-terms, group works and finals. This is possible with good planning and proactive tackling of my school obligations. But the best part? It is not just me. My fellow exchange students have also travelled a lot and explored destinations like Mainland China (Beijing and Shenzhen), Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto), Indonesia (Bali and Yogyakarta), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore, South Korea (Seoul) and Vietnam (Hanoi). There is no need to spend hours and hours researching and creating travel itineraries – your fellow students got your back and will share their best travel tips!
Thanks to the HSU student residence, I’m rarely feeling lonely in Hong Kong
An exchange semester at the HSUHK in Hong Kong not only allows you to travel through Asia and live in a city like no other, but also to find the right company for it and make friends for life. Through the people I have met here I have even been able to learn about countries I have not (yet) been able to travel to. Whether from Europe like Finland, France, Germany and Spain or Asian countries like India and Mainland China, these interactions brought me a lot of new insights. Through HSUHK residential colleges that are within walking distance of the school buildings and the many events they organize, I have been able to meet other students, both exchange students and locals. The proximity of the residential colleges to the classrooms also enables me to master my academic goals before catching my next flight!
So, why wait? Join me on my Jetsetter Scholarship adventure and apply for the international exchange programme now. Your biggest adventure is about to start at the Hang Seng University in Hong Kong.
