    Programmes offered by the Department

The BBA (Honours) in Accounting Concentration (‘the BBA-Accounting Programme’) aims to prepare students to pursue accountancy as a profession, not only a career. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of subject areas including financial reporting, management accounting, financial management, auditing, taxation, law, accounting information system and ethics. The BBA-Accounting Programme is duly recognised and accredited by local and international professional bodies such as the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), CPA (Australia), The Association of International Accountants (AIA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS). Our graduates are granted maximum exemptions by these professional bodies from their respective professional examinations on an equal footing with other university graduates from accountancy disciplines in Hong Kong. Graduates from the BBA-Accounting Programme are well-received by the market. More than 60% of our accounting graduates in 2014 worked on jobs in accounting/auditing/taxation, with others joining other sectors such as banking and finance or management trainee programmes.

The BBA (Honours) in Corporate Governance and Compliance (‘the BBA-CGC Programme’) (former title as BBA (Honours) in Corporate Governance) was first launched by the Department in September 2014. Through the comprehensive curriculum that combines both generic skills and business/specialty knowledge, the BBA-CGC Programme aims to provide students with quality education in corporate governance and develop students into corporate governance professionals (such as chartered secretaries) or corporate officers (such as compliance officers) in the area of corporate governance. The curriculum covers training not only on general and business related education, but also on specialty subject areas including company and securities law (Hong Kong and China), corporate governance, corporate secretaryship, corporate accounting, taxation, corporate finance and ethics. The BBA-CGC Programme is duly recognised and accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) and maximum exemptions of 4 papers (out of total 8 papers) have been granted from their International Qualifying Scheme.

The BBA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy aims to prepare students to pursue accountancy as a profession. The Programme equips students with theoretical accounting knowledge and practical application skills. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of subject areas including financial reporting, management accounting, financial management, auditing, taxation, law, accounting information system and ethics. Our graduates receive the maximum number of exemptions from various professional examinations. Our teachers coach students in professional competitions, creating a unique learning experience and benefiting students in the long run. Graduates are open to ample opportunities to become professional accountants, business leaders and entrepreneurs. They are highly recognised by employers. Most of our graduates work in accounting firms and financial institutions, or join management trainee programmes, or pursue studies in graduate schools.

    Teaching and Learning

Teaching excellence is a tradition in HSUHK and will continue to be our priority. The Department is committed to maintaining a team of quality and dedicated members to groom students with accounting talents both in theory and practice, as well as professional competency and ethicality. Our team is a balanced mix of members holding PhDs (or doctorate degrees), master’s degrees, and professional qualifications. Currently more than half of our teaching staff are certified public accountants or attorneys, with varying degrees of industry experience as well as teaching experience. Teaching duties are allocated in line with staff members’ areas of expertise. To enhance students’ learning, the Department has integrated various co-curricular initiatives into the curriculum delivery, including guest lectures from renowned practitioners, real-life scenarios used in assessments, up-to-date accounting/auditing software for students’ training, firm visits and participations in professional competitions. The Department highly values academic research that brings cutting-edge knowledge to life in classroom. Faculty members have various researches published in international academic journals as well as professional journals.
