On 2 April 2015, the Department of Economics and Finance was honoured to have invited Mr Peter Yau, Manager of the Investor Education Centre (IEC) to provide practical investment knowledge to students. IEC is a subsidiary of the Securities and Futures Commission which aims to raise the level of investment knowledge and skills of the general public of financial literacy and capability of making sound investment decisions.
Mr Yau started the talk by introducing the Hong Kong stock market and various types of stocks, such as Blue Chips and Red Chips. Though some of the concepts may be abstract, MrYau explained them in an interactive and interesting way by real-life examples that students had experienced. He also distributed a “Start Money Management Early” booklet for students’ reference. During the question and answer section, students proactively raised queries about the stock market and sought for tips on how to manage their money wisely. The talk not only enhanced students’ investment knowledge but also raised their awareness of risks.
