The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and professional ethics. Each university-sponsored team is composed of five official members and is required to prepare an equity research report on the same subject company. The Economics and Finance Department (EAF) launched the first EAF Investment Competition in Semester one to promote students’ interests in investment and financial markets. A total of 18 teams participated and started their simulated trading and investing activities in early September. After 7 weeks of managing their investment portfolios, five teams with the highest rate of return were shortlisted for the finalist round in which teams were required to prepare a presentation to explain their investment strategies. Students from BBA Banking and Finance and Financial Analysis Programmes represented HSUHK to participate into the Personal Finance Ambassador Programme 2019-20 jointly organized by HKEX, The Investor and Financial Education Council and St. James’ Settlement. The EAF department reached yet another milestone in the 2019/2020 academic year with a first-year intake of 63 students from mainland China. This intake surpasses that of past years and demonstrates the increased popularity of HSUHK in the mainland. To welcome the new students and to help them settle in a new environment, our department organized a social gathering for the students to mingle and meet faculty members. During the EAF Mid-Autumn Tea Gathering, Year 1 BBA-FA and BBA-FB students had their “first date” with their personal tutors. They enjoyed the mooncakes and other refreshments on that night. But more importantly, they had a pleasant time chatting with each other and also with their personal tutors! Through the ice-breaking games, they knew more about their personal tutors as well as their classmates. Some lucky ones got prizes too! The event ended with cheers and joy! 2 July 2019 Department of Economics and Finance launched the first Smart U-life Personal Finance Planning Competition from March to May 2019. The objective of this competition is to encourage high school students to learn and plan ahead well before starting their U-life and be the smart tertiary students in personal finance matters.
